Leveling

To find Capstone Publishers books within a specific level, click on the level in the matrix below.

The goal of all reading assessment programs is to match students to books at their reading level. For your convenience, we have correlated our titles to the most respected leveling systems. To find specific books, choose a grade level and follow the row across to the program your school uses. Please keep in mind this is a general guide as each student has unique needs.

* Parentheses indicate transitional grade levels.

ATOS Level TOP
Developed by Renaissance Learning, the ATOS Readability Formula determines the reading difficulty of a book by calculating the: semantic difficulty (measuring word length, frequency, and familiarity); syntactic difficulty (measuring sentence length); and book length. The ATOS leveling system is used in the Accelerated Reader reading management program.

Lexile Level TOP
Developed by researchers at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the Lexile Framework measures semantic and syntactic difficulty, as well as assesses the reader's comprehension of the text. The Lexile Framework is used in the Scholastic Reading Counts!TM reading motivation program.

Guided Reading Level TOP
Irene C. Fountas, a professor in the School of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Gay Su Pinnell, a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University, used their extensive literacy education experience to develop the Guided Reading system. Based on criteria such as vocabulary, sentence complexity, book and print features (i.e. pages and illustrations), text structure (i.e. flashbacks), and themes and ideas, Fountas and Pinnell split literacy development into four stages. These stages are: Emergent Readers (Levels A-E); Early Readers (Levels F-J); Early Fluent Readers (Levels K-P); and Fluent Readers (Levels Q-W). In addition to leveled text, Guided Reading uses shared reading, read aloud, and interactive writing activities to support the program.

Early-Intervention Level TOP
Early-Intervention programs are designed for beginning readers who show signs of reading difficulties. Reading Recovery is a short-term Early-Intervention program developed by Dr. Marie M. Clay, a New Zealand educator and researcher. The program consists of one-on-one tutoring for a half-hour each day with a trained Reading Recovery teacher. In each session, a student may read several small books containing predictable language, read a slightly more challenging text, compose and read a story, and learn reading skills and strategies for predicting and understanding text.
